One ceiling, over 2,000 names – celebrating UCD architecture
The Minister for Education and Skills, Ruairí Quinn TD added his name to a commemorative art installation at Richview, Belfield, to mark the beginning of a calendar of events to celebrate 100 years of UCD Architecture.
The installation is made up of over 2,000 coloured marmoleum tiles, each engraved with the name of a student who completed their studies in the School of Architecture between 1911 and 2011.
Minister Quinn graduated from the UCD School of Architecture in 1969 at the height of the ‘Gentle Revolution’ and subsequently taught there for ten years.

The installation, designed & constructed by students, is suspended from the ceiling in the Red Room at Richview; named for its timber walls and red linoleum floor. The Red Room is the heart of the UCD School of Architecture, where lectures, reviews, and events take place.
“The projects and events to mark the Centenary Year will highlight the achievements of UCD architecture graduates in all walks of life from architecture to politics, and fine art to theatre,” said Professor Hugh Campbell, Head of the UCD School of Architecture.

“One of the key projects in the Centenary Calendar is an audio archive and radio documentary of interviews with graduates and friends of the UCD School of Architecture produced by Lisa Cassidy, herself a recent architecture graduate.”
Other events and projects include: a series of ‘portrait’ exhibitions and accompanying lectures on influential graduates, who had long associations with the school, beginning with Andy Devane and also including Mairin Hope and Robin Walker; and exhibitions revisiting seminal works and events associated with the school, beginning with an exhibition of the Group 91 project for Temple Bar.
